                   Computer Technology

                             Email Mr. Hane at KHane@redlandchristianacademy.org

My name is Ken Hane. It is my privilege to teach the computer technology classes at Redland Christian Academy.  I am a veteran of 32 years teaching experience in the public school systems of Illinois (29), Tennessee (1), and  Florida (2).  I am currently in my fifth year at Redland Christian Academy.

I graduated from Union University, a Southern Baptist college, in Jackson, Tennessee. I graduated  with a bachelor of science degree, majoring in Health and Physical Education and a minor in Art.  Early in my teaching career I began involving myself with computers and their apparent future in the education system of our country.  I was fortunate to be able to grow in knowledge of computers as the computer industry grew and became an integral part of our lifestyle.  I have taken several computer classes in the past at Southern Illinois University and have been involved in one way or another with computers in education for the past 29  years.

Here at Redland Christian Academy, we are fortunate to have a very nice computer lab, consisting of a server and 25 workstations.  It is my responsibility to keep the lab current and operating to serve our student enrollment.

My classes range from Pre-K through 12th grade including 4 different ESE classes.  We attempt to give our students a basic knowledge and understanding of the computer and its use in our society today.  With the younger children, we attempt to introduce them to the computer and the use of the mouse and keyboard as a method of input.  Our we progress up through the age and class levels, our instruction becomes more and more involved using programs (Microsoft Office, Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Photoshop) that will better equip the students to be prepared for the demands of computer technology as they grow older.

With each class, we use a typing tutor (keyboarding) program which improves their skills in using the keyboard as a tool.  We spend a small part of each class time using these tutor programs. These programs have exercises which encourage to proper use of the hands in relation to the keyboard and increase the speed of the individual student.  At various intervals throughout the grade periods, students are given skills tests which aid in evaluating their individual improvement.
